NEWBERG, OR, UNITED STATES, September 10, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — The City of Newberg has completed a pedestrian safety improvement at a busy residential crossing, installing a solar-powered Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) system with integrated crosswalk lighting to improve crossing visibility and driver awareness for residents and visitors.
Located near residential activity, the upgraded crossing provides pedestrians with a more visible, clearly defined place to cross while giving motorists earlier visual cues as they approach the mid-block crossing The project reflects the City’s ongoing commitment to improving transportation infrastructure through practical, targeted safety investments.
To meet the City’s goals, Newberg selected a solar-powered crossing solution that delivers high visibility without requiring a major electrical infrastructure project. The installation includes Carmanah‘s R920-MX RRFB with an MX 300 solar module and crosswalk lighting, pedestrian push-button activation, crossing signs, pavement markings, and solar-powered beacon assemblies designed for reliable long-term operation.
The City and CPRD partnered with Western Systems, and Carmanah, to deliver the project from planning through commissioning. Working together, the team completed installation, system configuration, and field verification to prepare the crossing for daily operation.
City staff also highlighted the ease of field configuration using the MX App and Polara applications, allowing the system to be configured efficiently and verified before being placed into service.
The complete crossing includes beacon assemblies on both sides of the roadway, solar panels, integrated crosswalk lighting, pedestrian signage, and pavement markings that work together to increase driver awareness and improve pedestrian visibility.
Projects like this demonstrate how transportation agencies can improve pedestrian safety through targeted infrastructure investments that are practical to deploy and maintain. Solar-powered RRFB systems provide a flexible option for enhancing visibility at pedestrian crossings while minimizing construction impacts and utility requirements.
