Building on more than a decade of partnership, Sony + NFL are moving into the 2026 Season maintaining focus on advancing the game and laying a strong foundation for future innovation
SAN DIEGO, Sept. 3, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Sony Electronics Inc. and the National Football League (NFL) today shared an update summarizing the measurable impact Sony’s technologies have had across many of NFL’s most critical gameday operations and communications.
During the 2025 season, Sony’s broadcast cameras captured over 1,100 hours of NFL action across over 300 games, while Sony’s Alpha™ lineup of interchangeable lens cameras enabled The Associated Press to capture more than 130,000 images. The 2025 season marked a historic milestone as the first full season of Sony’s Hawk-Eye video replay and measurement technologies and Sony NFL Coach’s Headsets, supporting 630 officiating events and more than 2,300 Coach’s Headsets used by all 32 NFL teams with zero hardware failures over the entire season. Sony and the NFL will continue innovating to further enhance game operations and shape the future of football.
Seeing the Game Like Never Before
Sony imaging technologies help bring every NFL game to fans around the world. From live game coverage and replay to sideline photography and in-venue production, Sony’s professional cameras, accessories, and imaging solutions provide broadcasters with the speed, clarity, and reliability needed to capture football’s biggest moments.
Throughout the 2025 season, Sony imaging technologies supported the league’s more than 1,100 hours of live game broadcasts across its major broadcast partners. Hundreds of Sony cameras and imaging solutions support broadcast production across every NFL game, with more than 175 Sony cameras deployed on and around the field during Super Bowl LX alone. Sony’s high frame rate (HFR) cameras captured detailed slow-motion replays that brought fans even closer to the action.
Beyond the broadcast, Sony’s continued partnership with The Associated Press enabled their team of sports photojournalists to utilize the most advanced Alpha™ camera and lens technologies, capturing over 130,000 memorable images throughout the season.
Sony’s Beyond Sports innovations are helping drive fan engagement in entirely new ways by transforming real-time tracking data from Sony’s Hawk-Eye Innovations and the NFL’s Next Gen Stats powered by AWS into an immersive, animated viewing experience. During the 2025 season, its technology powered Monsters Funday Football, ESPN and Disney’s animated Monday Night Football alternate broadcast, contributing to ESPN’s highest Monday Night Football Week 14 audience ever in the ESPN era of the iconic franchise. These alternate broadcasts create new ways for broadcasters to tell the story of the game while engaging fans and reaching new audiences.
A Faster, More Precise Game Experience
Sony’s Hawk-Eye virtual measurement system has quickly become an integral part of NFL officiating, helping officials make first down measurements faster. Available across all NFL games, including preseason, regular season and postseason matchups, Sony’s Hawk-Eye technology supported 21 virtual measurements, completing each measurement in nearly half the average time as the traditional chain measurement.
This included several high-profile measurement situations, including two critical measurements during the Buffalo vs. Jacksonville playoff game, confirming first downs by margins of just two and four inches, respectively.
Sony’s Hawk-Eye technology also supports replay operations by providing officials and fans with additional camera angles and real-time visual data throughout the game. During the 2025 season, 360 Hawk-Eye boundary line cameras were installed across every NFL stadium (12 in each), including international venues, supporting 322 replay reviews and 141 replay assists. This provided officials with additional visual perspectives while helping broadcasters and fans better understand critical plays.
“Our partnership with Sony is rooted in a shared commitment to strengthening the game through innovation,” said Tracie Rodburg, Senior Vice President of Global Partnerships at the NFL. “From officiating and coaching communications to game operations, Sony’s technologies have delivered meaningful results and helped us provide a more consistent experience for officials, coaches, players and fans. As we look ahead, we’re excited to continue building on that success together.”
“For more than a decade, we’ve worked alongside the NFL to develop technologies that solve real challenges and support some of the most important moments in the game,” said Theresa Alesso, President, Imaging Products and Solutions Americas, Sony Electronics. “The results from the first season reflect what’s possible when innovation is built in collaboration with the people who use it. We’re excited to continue evolving that partnership and exploring what’s next together.”
Enabling Clear Communication Across the Sideline
Sony’s NFL Coach’s Headsets completed their first full season supporting all 32 NFL teams, delivering industry-leading noise cancellation for clear communication in some of the loudest environments in professional sports. With more than 2,300 headsets deployed across the league and more than 1,100 hours of gameday communication without a single hardware failure, the system provided coaches with the reliability, comfort, and clarity they need to make decisions throughout every game while supporting consistent game operations across the league.
“Sideline communication is one of the most critical parts of gameday operations, and Sony’s NFL Coach’s Headsets have exceeded our expectations in their first season,” said Kimberly Fields, Senior Vice President of Football Business & Innovation Strategy at the NFL. “The technology has delivered the reliability, clarity, and consistency our coaches need, and we’re excited to continue evolving the partnership.”
Looking Ahead
From next-generation broadcast cameras to state-of-the-art optical tracking technologies, Sony innovations are helping create new viewing angles, deliver richer in-stadium experiences and provide officials and broadcasters with more powerful tools than ever before.
New broadcast technologies, including Sony’s AI-enabled Pant-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) cameras, are expanding creative production possibilities by capturing unique perspectives from locations that were previously difficult to access while maintaining seamless color matching with Sony’s system cameras. Across stadiums, Sony imaging technologies are also supporting new in-venue experiences, from producing highlight reels for videoboards to providing officials and teams with additional replay perspectives.
At the same time, Sony and the NFL continue to evolve Sony’s Hawk-Eye tracking technologies to further enhance officiating and game administration. Planned advancements include expanded use of SkeleTRACK data and increased automation within the virtual measurement workflow to streamline operations, reduce manual inputs, expedite turnaround times and further improve the precision and consistency of virtual measurements, while continuing to evaluate future innovations such as ball spotting.
As the partnership continues to evolve, Sony and the NFL remain committed to continuing to innovate together, further build on this momentum, and help shape the future of football.
